In the vast ocean of chess literature there are relatively few books about the endgame, and only a few of them can be considered true chess classics. And the most outstanding among the classics — Reuben Fine's book "Basic Chess Endings". Reuben Fine (1914−1993) was for a long time one of the best chess players in the world. As an author, Fine showed himself to be an excellent analyst who understood the full depth and peculiarities of the endgame. Having studied various types of standard positions, Fine established useful rules for practical play and proved himself to be an experienced teacher who, using skillfully chosen examples, was able to teach the reader all the necessary lessons and introduce him to the basic ideas of the endgame. Many generations of chess players in different countries of the world keep copies of “Basic Chess Endings”. For example, Mikhail Botvinnik considered Fine's work the most worthy of all that had ever been written on endgame theory.

The youngest first–grader in the USSR, the world champion among young men, a participant in the candidates tournament at the age of 19 - Boris Spassky's rise was rapid. And then fate gave the brilliant chess player a test of strength: he stumbled twice at the decisive moment and remained beyond the threshold of interzonal tournaments ... Only ten years after his first great success, Spassky managed to pass all the qualifying tests and earn the right to a match for the crown, but he failed to defeat the Iron Tigran Petrosian the first time. It took three more years of super–efforts: by Sisyphus he rose again to the foot of Olympus and did not miss a second chance - in 1969 he became the Tenth king of chess! An essay about the life of Boris Vasilyevich and his sporting path full of ups and downs was written by Dmitry Oleynikov, Candidate of Historical Sciences, curator of the Chess Museum of the Chess Federation of Russia. 70 beautiful and instructive games of Spassky were commented on by the champion of Russia in 1993, the famous author and theorist grandmaster Alexey Bezgodov, as well as grandmaster Dmitry Kryakvin and FIDE master Steve Giddins. The preface was written by the 14th world champion Vladimir Kramnik. For a wide range of chess fans.

This volume of the anthology contains a number of collected and annotated games taken out of all the matches for the world chess championship between 1978 and 1998. The book covers the period of Karpov and Kasparov as the world title holders. Anatoly Karpov: «The third volume of this work contains games form several matches in which I have participated. I can say that every such match is a tough experience demanding a great expenditure of mental and physical effort. For the champion to be victorious, his purely chess skill, knowledge and memory are not always sufficient – these qualities are also possessed by his opponent, who has defeated his rivals in a succession of qualifying competitions. But even so, it is more often the existing champion who wins… This is why, until very recently, there had been very few of them – only thirteen. Now the chess world is witnessing the birth of a new system for conducting the world championship, in which it would seem that the element of luck will play a significant role. This has been explained by the increasing tempo of life, and by the need to make chess a more attractive spectacle for those who do not understand the deep meaning of chess moves. It will be a pity if future champions do not become genuine idols for those who value our wonderful game, to whom this absorbing book is addressed»

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov: «This three-volume anthology contains the collected and annotated games of all the matches for the world chess championship between 1886 and 1998. In the overwhelming majority of cases, these matches were battles between genuine chess giants. In 1947 the organization of the world championships, including qualifying competitions, was taken on by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). This strengthened both the prestige of the title itself, and also the prestige of FIDE, which competently arranged these events for half a century. Among the games presented in this work are a number of genuine masterpieces, the study of which will afford great pleasure to lovers of the game. It can be confidently stated that this publication gives the most vivid impression of the state of chess skill and chess knowledge at various stages in the history of our game throughout the last hundred years. The participants themselves commentated the games. The second games collection appeared a year later, in Germany. The author, Emil Schallopp, a well-known master and chess journalist, used analysis published in the English tournament book extensively, as well as in European chess periodicals. This book includes Schallopp’s commentary. Of course, many of E.Schallopp’s evaluations, especially as periains to the opening, have been disproved by modern theory. Nevertheless, the Russian Chess House left most of his commentary untouched, viewing it as a tribute to the epoch and believing it has great value in terms of chess history. In certain cases, analysis published by Schallopp’s successors and drastically reevaluating many key positions is provided. A few games have been commentated by S. Tarrash, G.Y. Levenfish and P.A.Romanovsky. The round overviews were written by B.Trubitsyn (rounds I-X and XVII-XXI) and B.I.Belensky (rounds XI-XVI). B.Trubitsyn also compiled the informational sources and wrote one of the introductory articles.

There are museum classics, like those dead languages, which are still studied, but which no one any longer speaks. And there are living classics, which are constantly being renewed; these are ‘languages’ which every succeeding generation ‘speaks’ in its own way, enriching and passing them on to their descendants. Chess in general and opening theory in particular are no exceptions to the general rule. The first volume gives a detailed and high-quality analysis of the Veresov Opening, the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit, the Levitsky Variation and other set-ups. The second volume is devoted to the London Variation and openings named in honour of Zukertort, Torre, Colle and others. In general only one thing is demanded of the reader: a desire. A desire to avoid well-trodden opening set-ups, and a desire to try something new. Do away with routine play! If you have such a desire, this two-volume work will become an indispensable assistant in your aim for creative experiments. And for victory! Fragment 1 Fragment 2

Eduard Gufeld: "The main of the King’s Indian Defence (or more precisely, the King’s Indian Attack!) if a battle against Wight’s pawn center with pieces, which must have the timely support of pawn counter. The King’s Indian Defence is an asymmetric opening! Black’s strategy is based on disrupting the opponent’s plans, and at the same time at an early stage of the opening Black tries to implement his own plan of counterplay. For this reason the King’s Indian Defence should be studied exclusively as a transition process from opening to middlegame. Hence a large part of this book comprises games which enable this link to be traced"
